I received my first certification as a massage therapist in 2008, right after I graduated high school. I had intended to work as a massage therapist while in training to become a medical doctor, but my journey took me in a different direction. As a high school and college athlete, I had developed chronic pain that the traditional western medical system did not have answers for. After being told by a doctor at age 19, that “nothing was wrong with my right knee, but maybe running just wasn’t for me and I should give up on it,” I embarked on a quest to heal my own pain and find the true answers I was not getting from the medical field. (Don’t get me wrong – I have been in major accidents that required emergency orthopedic surgery and blood transfusions, and I owe my life to allopathic medicine; there are many incredible medical doctors out there and this discipline certainly has a sacred place in our world. Still, I believe it’s fair that this system be held accountable for its blind spots, shortcomings, and financially-driven pollution). While getting my bachelor’s degree in physiology at UC Santa Barbara I worked as a massage therapist at Massage Envy, where I discovered that massage could provide significant relief for my clients, and I learned much from the alternative-health practitioners I sought out. Synchronicities also led me to discover the Egoscue Method of postural alignment therapy, which ultimately allowed me to find the pain relief I was looking for. By the time I graduated and decided to abandon the medical-school approach, healing had become a passionate calling for me, and it has remained a core part of who I am. I continued my education as a massage therapist and also obtained certifications in the Egoscue Method, Personal Training, and Yoga along the way (*please note that I have chosen to primarily focus on bodywork and no longer maintain active certifications for some of these, and tend to refer out when appropriate to those who excel in these fields). I have always followed what resonated for me as the most relevant and authentic, even if it meant taking the road less traveled by. I have always sought out and valued growth from mentorship, continuing education, nature, and hands-on experience. I am eternally grateful for all the gifts and challenges I have received along the way, and am ever humbled by how much more I have to learn. I am an avid reader, a lover of animals and the outdoors, and no stranger to the darker parts of life – all of which has enriched my healing practice. I care very deeply about making the world a better place and am always open to opportunities to create a culture based on caring for one another, reciprocity with the earth, and dismantling the systems that create imbalance and scarcity.
